The West Bengal University of Health Sciences, Kolkata was created under West Bengal Act XIII of 2002, notified in the Kolkata Gazette on 1 August 2002, and came into being on 1 January 2003. Before it existed, medical teaching in the state was supervised by various state universities, which left wide differences in teaching, evaluation and the recognition of graduates. Every medical and health sciences college in West Bengal is now affiliated to it, placing modern medicine, AYUSH, dental, nursing, pharmacy and paramedical and allied health sciences education under one umbrella.
