The School of Planning and Architecture began in 1941 as the Department of Architecture of the Delhi Polytechnic at Kashmiri Gate, the first place in Delhi to train architects. The Government of India set up the School of Town and Country Planning in 1955, and in 1959 the two were combined under the present name. The foundation stone of its planning campus at Indraprastha Estate was laid in 1958. Parliament declared it an Institution of National Importance in 2015. It teaches planning, architecture and design.
