Nava Nalanda Mahavihara was founded in 1951 at the historic site of Nalanda through the initiative of Bhikshu Jagadish Kashyap, with support from the Government of Bihar, to revive the intellectual legacy of the ancient Nalanda Mahavihara. It is devoted to advanced study of Pali, Buddhism and allied disciplines, and has published a 41-volume critically edited Pali Tipitaka in Devanagari script. The UGC granted it deemed-to-be-university status on 13 November 2006.
