National Institute of Technology Silchar was established in 1967 as the 15th Regional Engineering College; the Rules for the Regional Engineering College (Silchar) Society were adopted on 20 February 1967, and the Society was registered with the Government of Assam the next day. The college began functioning from a camp office in Shillong, and its Bachelor of Engineering programmes in Civil, Electrical and Mechanical Engineering started with the first batch of students admitted in 1977. It became National Institute of Technology, Silchar, with deemed university status, on 28 June 2002.
