NIT Raipur, in Chhattisgarh, was set up on 1 May 1956 as the Government College of Mining and Metallurgy, with its first session admitting 15 students each in Mining and Metallurgical Engineering. Courses in Civil, Mechanical and Electrical Engineering were added in 1958-59, and the college was renamed National Institute of Technology on 1 December 2005.
