NIMHANS traces to the Bangalore Lunatic Asylum, founded in 1847, and the All India Institute of Mental Health, inaugurated in Bangalore on 6 August 1954.
NIMHANS was formed in Bengaluru, Karnataka, on 27 December 1974 through the amalgamation of the Government of Mysore's Mental Hospital with the Government of India's All India Institute of Mental Health, itself sanctioned in 1954. Its lineage traces back to the Bangalore Lunatic Asylum, founded in 1847. The institute conducts education, patient care and research across psychiatry, neurology, neurosurgery and allied mental health and neuroscience disciplines.
