ICAR-National Dairy Research Institute traces to the Imperial Institute of Animal Husbandry and Dairying, whose foundation stone was laid in Bangalore on 1 July 1923. It was renamed the Imperial Dairy Institute in 1936, moved its headquarters to Karnal in 1955 where it was renamed the National Dairy Research Institute, and was brought under the Indian Council of Agricultural Research in 1970. It has held Deemed University status for its academic programmes since 1989, with the original Bangalore campus retained as a regional station.
