IIT Roorkee began in 1847 as Roorkee College of Civil Engineering, training engineers for the Ganges Canal works.
IIT Roorkee began in 1847 as Roorkee College of Civil Engineering, training engineers for the Ganges Canal works. It was renamed Thomason College of Civil Engineering in 1854 after its founder James Thomason, then Thomason College of Engineering in 1945 when Electrical and Mechanical Engineering departments were added. Jawaharlal Nehru converted it into the University of Roorkee on 25 November 1949, and the Government of India made it the country's seventh Indian Institute of Technology by an ordinance issued on 21 September 2001.
