IIT Kharagpur, the first Indian Institute of Technology, was born in May 1950 at the Hijli Detention Camp near Kharagpur, West Bengal, initially functioning from Esplanade East, Calcutta before moving to the Hijli site. It was formally inaugurated under the name Indian Institute of Technology on 18 August 1951 by Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, and now spreads over about 2,100 acres.
