Hemchandracharya North Gujarat University was established by Ordinance No. 5 of 1986, later passed as the North Gujarat University Act No. 22 of 1986 by the Gujarat Legislative Assembly. Patan, historically the capital of the Solanki kingdom and a centre of Jain scholarship, was chosen as its headquarters, and its jurisdiction spans the Mehsana, Patan, Banaskantha, Sabarkantha and Aravalli districts.
