Vidyasagar University - Midnapore

Vidyasagar University is named after Pandit Iswar Chandra Vidyasagar and serves the undivided district of Midnapore in West Bengal. The Government of West Bengal decided in 1978 to establish it, a Planning Committee was appointed in March 1979, and the Vidyasagar University Act, 1981 was passed, with Professor Bhupesh Chandra Mukherjee joining as first Vice Chancellor on 29 September 1981. Thirty colleges of Midnapore were affiliated to it from 1 June 1985, and the Tantigaria campus was inaugurated on 15 January 1986, with classes starting the next day in six postgraduate departments.
