The University of Lucknow grew out of a proposal first raised by Raja Sir Mohammad Ali Mohammad Khan of Mahmudabad and taken up by Sir Harcourt Butler as Lieutenant-Governor of the United Provinces. The University of Lucknow Act, No. V of 1920, received the assent of the Governor-General on 25 November 1920. The Court of the University was constituted in March 1921 and teaching began on 17 July 1921. King George's Medical College, Canning College and Isabella Thoburn College provided the nucleus for the new university.
