The University of Kerala was founded in 1937 as the University of Travancore, brought into being by a promulgation of the Maharajah of Travancore, Sri Chithira Thirunal Balarama Varma, who was also its first Chancellor. The Kerala University Act of 1957 renamed it the University of Kerala. As Calicut, CUSAT, Kerala Agricultural University and Mahatma Gandhi University were formed, its jurisdiction shrank to the Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam and Alappuzha districts and parts of Pathanamthitta. It has sixteen faculties and forty-four departments of teaching and research.
