The University of Calcutta was founded on 24 January 1857, after the Court of Directors of the East India Company sent a despatch in July 1854 to the Governor-General of India in Council suggesting the establishment of universities at Calcutta, Madras and Bombay. It adopted the pattern of the University of London in the first instance and gradually modified its constitution. Its offices are at 87/1 College Street, Kolkata.
