University of Allahabad

The University of Allahabad was established on 23 September 1887, when Act XVIII was passed, making it the fourth oldest university in India after Calcutta, Bombay and Madras. It grew out of Muir Central College at Allahabad, now named Prayagraj, whose foundation stone was laid on 9 December 1873 at the initiative of Sir William Muir, Lt. Governor of the United Provinces. It began as a degree-conferring institution, and between 1922 and 1927 its external wing was separated from it, leaving it unitary and residential.
