Sikkim Manipal University was established in 1995 under the Sikkim Manipal University of Health, Medical and Technological Sciences Act (Act No. 9 of 1995). Its constituent college Sikkim Manipal Institute of Technology came into existence in 1997, following an agreement signed on 15 November 1992 between the Government of Sikkim and the Manipal Pai Foundation. It runs campuses at Majitar and at Tadong in Gangtok, and its other constituent institutes are Sikkim Manipal Institute of Medical Sciences, Sikkim Manipal College of Nursing and Sikkim Manipal College of Physiotherapy.
