The Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research is a medical institute and teaching hospital in Chandigarh. It started in 1962, and Jawaharlal Nehru inaugurated its hospital, now named Nehru Hospital, on 7 July 1963. Administrative control passed from undivided Punjab to the Union Territory of Chandigarh in November 1966, and in 1967 an Act of Parliament made it an autonomous body under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. Its mandate is patient care, postgraduate medical education and community based research.
