Periyar University is a state university at Salem in Tamil Nadu, set up by the Government of Tamil Nadu on 17 September 1997 under the Periyar University Act, 1997. Its territory covers the districts of Salem, Namakkal, Dharmapuri and Krishnagiri. It teaches through its own departments of study and research, through affiliated colleges across those districts, and through a Centre for Distance and Online Education.
