National Law School of India University was established under the National Law School of India Act, Karnataka Act 22 of 1986, which was notified in the official Gazette on 29 August 1987. Founding director Prof. Madhava Menon set up the university with the cooperation of the Government of Karnataka and Bangalore University, and it introduced India's first five-year integrated law degree, with its first batch admitted in 1988.
