National Institute of Technology Tiruchirappalli started on 13 July 1964 as a joint and co-operative venture of the Government of India and the Government of Tamil Nadu, initially as Regional Engineering College, Tiruchirappalli. It was granted Deemed University status in 2003 and renamed National Institute of Technology, Tiruchirappalli, and in 2007 an act of Parliament made it an Institution of National Importance.
