National Institute of Technology Hamirpur began on 7 August 1986 as a Regional Engineering College, a joint venture of the Government of India and the Government of Himachal Pradesh, starting with Civil and Electrical Engineering departments and 30 students each. It gained deemed university status in 2002, and became an Institute of National Importance under the National Institute of Technology Act, effective 15 August 2007.
