National Institute of Technology Agartala began in 1965 as Tripura Engineering College, initially affiliated to Calcutta University and following the curriculum of Bengal Engineering College. After Tripura University was created in 1987, the college's affiliation moved there. The Union Cabinet approved its conversion into a National Institute of Technology on 23 February 2006, and it holds Institute of National Importance status. It is located in Jirania, West Tripura.
