National Institute of Design was set up in Ahmedabad in September 1961 as an autonomous, all-India institution for design education and research.
National Institute of Design was set up in Ahmedabad in September 1961 as an autonomous, all-India institution for design education and research. Its creation followed the India Report, presented by Charles and Ray Eames to the Government of India on 7 April 1958, with support from the Ford Foundation and the Sarabhai family. NID adopted the Bauhaus principle of learning by doing, which continues to shape its teaching in industrial design and visual communication.
