Mahatma Gandhi Kashi Vidyapeeth was established in 1921 as Kashi Vidyapith, founded by Shiv Prasad Gupta with Dr Bhagwandas as founding vice-chancellor, and administered under the Uttar Pradesh state legislature. It was later renamed after Mahatma Gandhi. It is a state university in Varanasi with more than 350 affiliated colleges across five districts of Uttar Pradesh.
