JIPMER traces its origins to the 'Ecole de Medicine de Pondicherry', a medical school established by the French Government in 1823 and housed in modified High Court buildings. A new medical college was founded on the town's outskirts in 1956, and its hospital was inaugurated on 13 July 1964. In July 2008 it was made an Institution of National Importance by an Act of Parliament, on the lines of AIIMS Delhi and PGIMER Chandigarh.
