The Institute of Post Graduate Medical Education & Research (IPGMER) in Kolkata grew out of Presidency General Hospital, renamed Seth Sukhlal Karnani Memorial (SSKM) Hospital in 1954. It was inaugurated as IPGMER by Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru on 16 January 1957, the first postgraduate medical institute in Eastern India, and today teaches undergraduate, postgraduate and postdoctoral medical, nursing and paramedical courses alongside SSKM Hospital.
