The Indian Veterinary Research Institute began as the Imperial Bacteriological Laboratory, established at Pune in 1889 under Dr Alfred Lingard.
The Indian Veterinary Research Institute traces its origin to the Imperial Bacteriological Laboratory, established at Pune in 1889 under Dr Alfred Lingard. It moved to Mukteswar in 1893 for biosafety reasons, and to its present site at Izatnagar, Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh, after acquiring 306 hectares of land there in 1913. Renamed several times, it took its current name after independence and came under the Indian Council of Agricultural Research in 1966.
