The Indian School of Mines was formally opened at Dhanbad on 9 December 1926 by Lord Irwin, then Viceroy of India, to train personnel for the country's mining industry in Mining Engineering and Applied Geology, with Dr David Penman as its first founder-principal. It was granted deemed-to-be-university status under the UGC Act in 1967, and on 6 September 2016 it was redesignated as the Indian Institute of Technology (Indian School of Mines), Dhanbad, Jharkhand.
