IIT Madras traces its origin to a 1956 offer of assistance from the Government of the Federal Republic of Germany during Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru's visit, formalised in the first Indo-German Agreement signed at Bonn in 1959. The Institute was formally inaugurated in 1959 by Union Minister Prof. Humayun Kabir, with Dr A. Lakshmanaswamy as the first Chairman of its Board of Governors and Dr B. Sengupto as its first Director. It sits on a 630-acre campus in Chennai, Tamil Nadu.
