IIT Kanpur, established in 1959 in Kalyanpur, Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, is one of the first-generation IITs. From 1962 to 1972, its Kanpur Indo-American Programme brought technical assistance from a consortium of nine American institutions, including MIT, Caltech and Princeton, helping build its early teaching and research base in engineering and science.
