The plan to establish IIT Jammu was announced in the Union Budget 2014-15, alongside four other new IITs.
The plan for IIT Jammu was announced in the Union Budget 2014-15, alongside new IITs in Chhattisgarh, Goa, Andhra Pradesh and Kerala. It was inaugurated on 6 August 2016 in Jammu and Kashmir, welcoming its first students at a campus in Paloura under the mentorship of IIT Delhi. In 2018 it shifted its main operations to a 400-acre site at Jagti village on National Highway 44 near Jammu, while the Paloura campus now houses PhD scholars and the Central Instrumentation Facility.
