Indian Institute of Technology Bombay

IIT Bombay was established in 1958 as part of a government initiative inspired by recommendations from a committee led by Sir Nalini Ranjan Sarkar, with equipment, experts and fellowships supported by UNESCO and the USSR. In 1961, an Act of Parliament (the Institutes of Technology Act, No. 59 of 1961) granted it the status of an institution of national importance able to confer its own degrees and diplomas. Its campus covers 200 hectares in Powai, Mumbai.
