Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology, Shibpur began as B.E. College, established in 1856, and is India's second-oldest engineering college. In March 2014 it was taken over by the Government of India and converted into an Institute of National Importance through an Act of Parliament, becoming the first institution to be renamed IIEST. It is located at Botanic Garden, Shibpur, Howrah, and teaches through 16 departments and 8 schools.
