The Indian Agricultural Research Institute, known as the Pusa Institute, began in 1905 at Pusa, Bihar, with a grant from the American philanthropist Henry Phipps. It was renamed the Imperial Institute of Agricultural Research in 1911 and the Imperial Agricultural Research Institute in 1919. Following the earthquake of 15 January 1934, it relocated to Pusa, New Delhi, on 29 July 1936, where it continues to operate under the Indian Council of Agricultural Research, conducting research, education and extension in agriculture.
