Hemwati Nandan Bahuguna Garhwal University, named after Sri Hemvati Nandan Bahuguna, was established in 1973 following a mass movement to bring higher education to this remote and geographically difficult region of Uttarakhand. In 2009 a parliamentary act granted it central university status. It operates across three campuses at Srinagar (Birla Campus), Pauri (BGR Campus) and Tehri (SRT Campus), with 49 departments and 11 schools of study.
