Gujarat Vidyapith in Ahmedabad was founded by Mahatma Gandhi on 18 October 1920 as one of five national 'vidyapiths' set up during the non-cooperation movement to educate students who had left British-run schools and colleges. Gandhi served as its lifelong chancellor. The Government of India recognised it as a deemed university in July 1963 under Section 3 of the UGC Act, 1956.
