Government Medical College, Patiala, Punjab, commonly known as GMC-Patiala, is a prestigious medical institution in Punjab, established just after independence in 1953, and is run and managed by the Government of Punjab (Medical Education Department). This was the first Medical College in Punjab State with a population of over 20 lacs. The Rajendra Hospital, Patiala, was under construction when the college started. The foundation stone of the college building was laid by Dr. Rajendra Parshad then the President of India. Government Medical College, Patiala is a Government Medical College affiliated with Baba Farid University of Health Sciences, Faridkot, Punjab. The college is now recognized by the Medical Council of India (MCI) as the National Medical Commission (NMC), the college is situated at Sangrur Road, Opposite Rajindra Hospital, Patiala, Punjab-147001. Government Medical College, Patiala is well connected by Air, Train, and Roadways in its serene atmosphere.
Government Medical College, Patiala, was started on 29 September 1953 in the former Pepsu State, with its foundation stone laid by President Rajendra Prasad on 21 December 1953. Its attached Rajindra Hospital, named after Maharaja Rajendra Singh, was opened by Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru in 1954, and the college also runs an attached T.B. Hospital.
