Gauhati University is a public university in Guwahati, Assam, incorporated by an Act of the Assam Legislative Assembly in 1947 and began functioning on 26 January 1948 as an affiliating, teaching and residential university, with K. K. Handique as its first Vice-Chancellor. Starting with 18 affiliated colleges and 8 postgraduate departments, it is the oldest university in Northeast India and now runs 39 postgraduate departments.
