Cochin University of Science and Technology was constituted as the University of Cochin by an Act of the Kerala government on 10 July 1971, growing out of the Ernakulam Centre of the University of Kerala, and was re-constituted under its present name in February 1986. Its stated purpose is graduate and postgraduate study and advanced research in applied sciences, technology, industry, commerce, management and social sciences. It is organised into nine faculties and 27 departments of study and research.
