Bharathiar University was set up at Coimbatore by the Government of Tamil Nadu in February 1982 under the Bharathiar University Act, 1981.
Bharathiar University was set up at Coimbatore by the Government of Tamil Nadu in February 1982 under the Bharathiar University Act, 1981. The postgraduate centre of the University of Madras that had been working in Coimbatore before then formed its core. It is an affiliating university with 39 departments, teaching 54 postgraduate programmes as well as M.Phil. and Ph.D. Its jurisdiction covers the districts of Coimbatore, Erode, Tirupur and The Nilgiris, and 147 colleges are affiliated to it.
