Bharath Institute of Higher Education and Research grew out of Bharath Institute of Science and Technology, founded in Tamil Nadu in 1984 by Sri Lakshmi Ammal Educational Trust as the state's first self-financing engineering college. It took its present name in 2002 and now spans six campuses in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, with medical, dental, nursing and physiotherapy institutions in Chennai and Puducherry alongside its engineering base.
