Bangalore Medical College and Research Institute started in 1955 as a private medical school founded by the Mysore Education Society, and was handed to the then Government of Mysore in 1957. Five hospitals are attached to it: Victoria Hospital, Vani Vilas Women and Children's Hospital, Minto Ophthalmic Hospital, the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana super speciality hospital and a trauma and emergency care centre. Besides medicine it teaches nursing, allied health sciences and paramedical diploma and certificate courses.
