Azim Premji University was founded in 2010 by the Azim Premji Foundation, which had been working on elementary education in government schools since 2000 and wanted an institution to prepare people for work in education and development. It opened with two programmes in those fields alongside courses for people already working in the sector, and now teaches from campuses in Bengaluru, Bhopal and Ranchi. Its Bengaluru campus is at Sarjapura on the edge of the city.
