Founded in 1985, Alagappa University is a non-profit public higher-education institution located in the urban setting of the small city of Karaikudi (population range of 50,000-249,999 inhabitants), Tamil Nadu. Officially recognized by the University Grants Commission of India, Alagappa University (AU) is a coeducational Indian higher education institution. Alagappa University, Karaikudi was initiated by a Special Act of the Government of Tamil Nadu on May 1985. The University has 39 Departments, 9 Centres, and 2 Constituent Colleges on its campus, 44 Affiliated Colleges located in the districts of Sivaganga and Ramanathapuram. It has been accredited by NAAC with A+ grade.  It provides a variety of courses at different levels such as undergraduate, postgraduate, certificate, diploma and postgraduate diploma. Admission to these courses is done on the basis of merit scored in the last qualifying examination, however, for some courses like B.Ed, B.Sc, MCA, the university conducts a separate entrance test.
